The Worcester Housing Authority (WHA) broke ground on a key component of the second phase of the Curtis Apartments redevelopment. The Economic Opportunity Center is a mixed use building that will house twenty four new apartments, office, supportive services programs and a new Great Brook Valley Branch of the Worcester Public Library. Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll (D), EOHLC Secretary Ed Augustus, State Senator Robyn Kennedy, State Representative James O'Day, Worcester Mayor Joe Petty, and Worcester City Manager Eric Batista were among the state and local leaders in attendance. The Worcester Housing Authority says the center will provide families a chance to improve and enhance their lives. Worcester Housing Authority Chief Executive Officer Alex Corrales, "It's about creating opportunity. So we're going to have families who achieve self-sufficiency, and they're breaking the cycle of poverty. We want their children to recognize that public housing is only a stepping stone along the way. That's what the Economic Opportunity Center represents." Phase Two of the project also includes the new construction of 150 housing units.
